Range is what matters. Move in towards yourself, and you have a long succession of perishing appearances. Move all the way in, and you are the Imperishable Reality they are appearances of. If you want to be Yourself and no longer a shadow of Yourself, if you want to be Real, you must break the habit of continually leaping out of yourself in the effort to see yourself from out there as others see you, and cultivate the habit of sitting at Home and seeing yourself as you see yourself. stillness

“Q: Is there any way to stop this chatter?

Bob: No. Do you chatter? Understand and watch it. If you haven’t got a vested interest in it, what is going to happen? It is going to die down. You see, when the chatter starts and I attribute it to ‘me’ and ‘I want this’ or ‘I don’t like that’ or ‘He said so and so’ and ‘blah, blah, blah, blah’ – I have a vested interest in it. Now, in that vested interest what is happening? The energy of ‘I’ and ‘this’. The ‘I’ is a thought, and the ‘this’ is a thought. But that energy is opposed to itself. It is a dissipating energy. It is in conflict with itself. But if I understand that there is no centre here and that it is just chatter and I am aware of it, then there is no ‘me’ that wants anything out of it. There is nothing resisting it. It is just what is. Then there is no energy going into it.

Now can a thing live without energy? No! So, in the watching of it, in the awareness of it without bothering about it, in seeing it for what it is, that is false, it is going to die down of its own accord. So, there is no need to try and stop it. In trying to stop it, the mind will be in conflict with the mind. That will get you into all sorts of trouble, which it has done until now.

Q: How do we stop? I see that chatter but I am still giving it value?

Bob: Well, keep watching it and ask yourself who is this ‘me’ that is giving it value? Until it comes up that you see that this ‘me’ is only an idea. Where is this centre? Where does this so-called me start? Look and try and find a centre or a spot in your body which you believe is ‘me’, or in your mind which you believe is ‘me’. Look as hard as you like. If you can find it, you come and tell me! I know for certain that there is no particular place in this body or this mind of which I can say ‘This is where I begin’, ‘This is where it all starts’.

In your own looking you will find that the false cannot stand up to investigation. You are not the hand; you are not your ear; you are not your nose. There is no particular spot where you can say ‘This is where I began’. Have a look at the body. It started off as a single sperm and a single ovum, which were the essences of the food that you mother and father ate. Where is that cell? That would be the centre, that would be the start of it all, but that cell has doubled and redoubled and it is long gone.

From another angle, am I this mind? the mind is just composed of thought. Which particular thought am I? Am I this ‘I’ thought, but where is that ‘I’ thought if I am deeply asleep or unconscious? It is not there! That would be the finish of me if I was that ‘I’ thought. But the breathing is still happening; the functioning is still happening; there is  not centre there.

So when the chatter goes on and you see that there is no centre to attribute it to, then it must lose its hold. It becomes laughable!”

rmaharishiForgetfulness of your real nature is the real death;
remembrance of it is the true birth.
It puts an end to successive births.  Eternal life is then yours.
How does the desire for eternal life arise?
Because the present state is unbearable.  Why?
Because, it is not your true nature.
Had it been your real nature, there would be no desire to agitate you.
How does the present state differ from your real nature?
Truly, you are spirit.
Human beings consider themselves limited and that is the root of the trouble.
The idea is wrong.  In sleep there was no world, no ego and no trouble.
Something wakes up from that happy state and says “I”.
To that ego the world appears.
It is the rise of the ego that is the cause of the trouble.
But trace the ego to its origin, and you will reach that undifferentiated happy source,
a state which is sleepless sleep.
The Self is ever there;
wisdom only appears to dawn, though it is natural.
Conscious death and conscious immortality (while still in the flesh)
is the purpose of evolution.

“Seeing Who one is occurs out of time because seeing Who one is is God seeing Who He is and God doesn’t see from half past three until quarter to four. God sees out of time and one’s seeing is not Douglas seeing that he is really God, it is God seeing that He is really God. It is out of time and so in that sense one doesn’t see all the time or for some of the time, or in time. One sees out of time. Yet there is another sense of course in which one can say that one’s seeing is intermittent, more continuous. That is the common-sense way of talking about it and we speak of people who flash into their Emptiness and then forget it, for months and months, and then meet a seer, or someone, and flash in again. There is a sense in which this does happen. It is a provisional way of speaking. Even for such people it is really out of time.” (Douglas Harding. Quoted from Seeing Who You Really Are by Richard Lang.)

space and time

Q: Can you talk about space and time being the same thing?

Bob: Well space is volume really, isn’t it, and time is duration?

Q: Yes

Bob: Now for me to get from here to where you are, does it take duration, take time? If it wasn’t  for the volume, would there be any need to get from here to there? So they’re really one and the same thing. Again it brings it back to the non-duality of everything. And you see that couldn’t happen if there wasn’t a me and a you first – there wasn’t a centre for it to be measured from. That duration and the seeming apparent entity have to be in the volume. There can be no distance without measuring from some point.

Q: So do reference points still keep coming up?

Bob: Yes. Just the same as choices are seemingly made, opinions are seemingly held, and reference points seemingly come up. But knowing that there’s nothing there for them to attach on to, they don’t hang around. That’s the difference. They’re not fixated on and clung to. They are free to move on.

Q: In a sense, though, the reference points seem to be useful to exist in this world.

Bob: Yes, but there is no psychological trouble in any of that, is there? It’s just a natural function of the living-ness. Things get done or don’t get done, or whatever. Referring to this conceptual entity that we believe ourselves to be – that’s where all the suffering comes from. That’s all that can ever be seemingly hurt or touched.

But when you look in nature, can  you see a reference point anywhere? Is there anything in nature where other things are being measured from? Does the earth in its orbit around the sun say, “I’m this far today and I’ll be a bit closer to the sun at the end of next week”.  Do the comets in the outer reaches of the solar system say, “I’ll soon be heading back towards earth”? The reference point measured from is from the earth and the earth’s constantly moving too, so how can you say it’s a valid reference point? In relation to space, where is earth? Is it here or there or wherever?”

“The result of observing only the universe is anxiety. Only observing the Observer of the universe will put a stop to a man’s worrying and fussing and scheming. When his interest is diverted inwards he naturally relaxes his hold – his stranglehold – on the outer world. Having withdrawn his capital and paid it into his own Central Bank (where it appreciates to infinity), he has nothing to lose out there and no reason for interfering. He knows how to let things be and work out in their own time. He’s in no hurry. Knowing the Self, he can hardly fail to trust its products. Whatever occurs is fundamentally agreeable to him. In Christian terms, he has no will but God’s: what he wants is what happens and what happens is what he wants. Paradoxically his obedience to the nature of things is his rule over them. His weakness is in the long run all-powerful. And the secret of his power over things is that he goes to the Source. “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added unto you.” Seek ye first these things, and even they shall be taken away.

This perfect obedience isn’t just lining oneself up with God’s will, or imitating it, or even becoming part of it. It’s that very will itself in full operation. If we wish to find out what it’s really like to create the world, we have only to desire nothing and pay attention. But total acceptance is very hard. It’s precisely the opposite of the lazy indifference that lets things slide. It springs from inner strength and not weakness, from concentration, not slackness. Why is the world so troublesome, so frightful? Is it like that by nature, or because we take the easy way of fighting it instead of the difficult way of fitting in with it? We have to find out for ourselves the truth of the sage’s demonstration that even in the smallest things the way of non-interference, of giving up all self-will, of “disappearing,” is astonishingly practical, the way that works. Not only in the long run but from moment to moment consciously getting out of the Light, giving place to whatever happens to be presenting itself in that Light, is astonishingly creative. We do too much and therefore remain ineffectual, we talk far too much and therefore say nothing, we think far, far too much and therefore prevent the facts from speaking for themselves – so say those who know the value of emptiness. It’s for us to make our own tests, not – repeat not – by the direct method of trying to be quiet and mindless (it just won’t work) but by the indirect method of seeing Who, it seems, was trying to be like that. No man becomes Godlike except by seeing that he isn’t a man anyway. (Douglas Harding. Look For Yourself.)”

one existenceQ: I don’t know whether I can come to terms with the fact that I don’t exist.

Bob: Nobody says anything about non-existence. You are existence itself. There is only one existence, one presence, one power, one intelligence. Instead of confining yourself to that little pattern you call me, which in the scheme of things is nothing, you’re trying to work it out in the mind. Me can never come to terms with it. As Nisargadatta says, “You’re trying to grasp it with a concept – and  you fail. And you are bound to fail.” He means you’ll always fail while you’re trying to grasp it with a concept.

But, full stop right now, without a thought, are there any concepts going on? Yet have you stopped seeing? Have you stopped hearing? Have you stopped being aware? In that instant without a concept, without a thought, before another concept arises, you realise that you are existence; you are the living-ness, the being-ness. Do you have to come to terms with that? You can only come to terms with it with another concept. It’s just as it is – unadorned, naked awareness – not adorned by concepts. As the poem says, “It’s closer than your breathing, nearer than your hands and feet.” you’ve never been away from it. Never could.

Taken from Only That – the life and teaching of Sailor Bob Adamson

by Kalyani Lawry

“Wisdom is knowing I am nothing,
Love is knowing I am everything,
and between the two my life moves.”

― Nisargadatta Maharaj

“In recognising presence awareness, there is no ‘thing’ to see, just natural non-conceptual seeing, actually as it is without subject or object. See this and the realisation is immediate that what is labeled as awareness or consciousness or mind can never be formulated as either a subject or an object. Being empty of a subject or object, it is emptiness seeing (cognising emptiness). Emptiness can never be emptied of emptiness, nor can it be filled by emptiness. With that concept cancelled out, only the wordless thoughtless indescribable emptiness remains. Not a vacuum or a void, but a vivid self-shining, self-knowing, self-aware emptiness, like a clear sky full of light. See for yourself. No one or other can do it for you. Immediate simplicity. Continue to see that the seeing is continuous. Any doubt, question, or argument, and the conceptual seeker has appeared again. See that and non-conceptual emptiness remains undisturbed”.

Sailor Bob Adamson

“The sense of presence expressing through the mind as the thought ‘I am’ is pure intelligence energy.

It is the knowing that you are.

The same intelligence-energy is functioning this universe.

That innate intelligence is the essence of everything that appears and disappears.

Realize that you are aware of presence right now.

You know that you are.

It spontaneously arises.

The vibration, pulsation or throb of that intelligence is happening spontaneously.

There is nothing to start it; nothing to stop it.

Realize there is no one to do it, and nothing to do, and it will settle down of its own accord.”
